So what&#8217;s changed since then?<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">It&#8217;s a\u00a0<a class=\"_2f8qj FQVx7 _2tPjN _1QHxY\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2020-03-02\/coronavirus-questions-what-is-it-should-i-be-worried\/12017326\" data-component=\"ContentLink\">question plenty of you have asked<\/a>\u00a0in recent months: how do pandemics end? And how will the one we&#8217;re currently living through end?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"NVRkN _38pgX _1deB8 jwLlj hsTMN _1GKnS _2o9MN _1-RZJ\" data-component=\"Heading\">Three ingredients for a pandemic<\/h2>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">An infectious agent needs three conditions to cause a pandemic, says virologist Kirsty Short from the University of Queensland:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"_1w6Cw _1OfOB _3PXHS\" data-component=\"List\">\n<li class=\"\" data-component=\"ListItem\"><span class=\"XoNws _1B-No\">1.<\/span>It needs to cause disease in humans<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-component=\"ListItem\"><span class=\"XoNws _1B-No\">2.<\/span>It needs to be highly transmissible<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-component=\"ListItem\"><span class=\"XoNws _1B-No\">3.<\/span>We need to have no pre-existing immunity to it<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">&#8220;For example, we live with MERS today,&#8221; says Dr Short, referring to Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome, a coronavirus that is related to the one that causes COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">&#8220;It hasn&#8217;t caused a pandemic yet because it&#8217;s not highly transmissible from person to person.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">&#8220;In contrast, the seasonal coronaviruses that we get, probably at one point were a pandemic, and they&#8217;ve just become these seasonal colds that we don&#8217;t really care about because we&#8217;ve evolved immunity to them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<aside class=\"_1w6Cw _1pc-9 _3Jwam\" data-print=\"inline-media\" data-component=\"LegacyWysiwyg\">\n<h2 class=\"_3mduI _2gTdF _1deB8 jwLlj _1O6ck _1GKnS _2o9MN _1-RZJ\" data-component=\"Heading\">Stay up-to-date on the coronavirus outbreak<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"_1w6Cw _1OfOB W8pqX\" data-component=\"List\">\n<li class=\"\" data-component=\"ListItem\"><a class=\"_2f8qj FQVx7 _2tPjN _1QHxY\" href=\"https:\/\/abcapp.page.link\/download\" data-component=\"ContentLink\">Download the ABC News app and subscribe to our range of news alerts for the latest on how the pandemic is impacting the world<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">In terms of the three ingredients that make a pandemic, when it comes to COVID-19<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>there&#8217;s not much we can do to stop the coronavirus from infecting us, because that&#8217;s based on the biology of the virus and us as humans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">With physical distancing and masks, we are somewhat able to pull that second lever of not allowing the virus to transmit as much.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">But the big thing that stops a virus becoming a pandemic \u2014 that is, a large-scale outbreak affecting multiple countries or continents \u2014 is the third factor: immunity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">&#8220;Herd immunity can be achieved through natural infection or vaccination,&#8221; Dr Short says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do pandemics usually end?
